Later School

You bump into the wall as you walk down the hallway to go to the restroom. Using your dad’s shaving cream instead of toothpaste for your tooth brush. Putting your shirt inside-out as you walk, scratch that, run down the stairs. Eating your breakfast as fast as you can. You’re now rushing to class, studying for the world history test you’re about to take. Running as fast as a cheetah, but you’re still tardy. Is this you? If not, then consider yourself lucky.

Current schools start time forces children to go to class at times when, according to their natural biological rhythms, they should be asleep. School should start later in the day because most students wake up late and very mad for some reasons. It would help students get in a better mood, have breakfast, study their subjects, and still not be late for school. The proof that researchers found have reported a negative correlation between self-reported hours of sleep and school grades.

Later school doesn’t only help you have more sleep or help you get better grades, but it can also save lives! It’s really dangerous for teens to drive to school because some of them could just fall asleep in the middle of the road and get into car accidents. This explains the leading of mood problems and poorer academic performance, such as driving.

If starting school later would help us a lot, why not change the schedules? Well, it’s not that easy. The bus schedules would have to change, we would have less time to do our homework and after school activities. Parents might not even have time to drop off their children to school. It can also give us less time to do things we needed to do. Some people think that starting school later would send the wrong message for students. If school starts late then many students would sleep later or maybe use their time to just watch TV. I could agree on this, but there are so many why school should start early and why is better. If students do slack off then that’s their problem.

One 2012 study found that middle schoolers test scores rose in reading and math just because they had plenty of sleep. “Well-rested kids learn better, says Heather Macintosh of Start School Later, a non profit organization. “They are happier, get better grades, and their bodies are healthier.” Having better grades and feeling good when you wake up can weaken the counter arguments that some people might have.

Just think about this for a second, I know it would be so much work for you to change schedules. Maybe just change the time schools starts at least about an hour more. Just think about it.
